A roguelike Metroidvania with a hand-drawn art style

Rogue Legacy 2 is a roguelike Metroidvania game that utilizes a novel system in which a character dying is permanent, but the player continues to play with the deceased character’s child, who will have unique traits. The game also features a distinctive hand-drawn art style.

A Metroidvania game is the name given to games inspired by the classic Metroid and Castlevania games. Examples of this genre can be found in F.I.S.T. Forged In The Shadow Torch and The Last Faith. This style of game features gated exploration and action-packed combat.

Building on a popular game

Rogue Legacy 2 is described by the developers as what the original Rogue Legacy game and a sequel would look like if they were mashed together. Essentially, this game contains more tweaks, improvements, and extras. Fans of the first game will likely enjoy this one, while general fans of Metroidvania games should still find it appealing.

A rich narrative to experience

The story of Rogue Legacy 2 takes place against the backdrop of a once-thriving kingdom that has collapsed, with the player learning the secrets of the beings responsible for that fall. As the player works their way through the world, individual characters also have their own stories to tell.

What’s new in Patch v1.2.1?

Rogue Legacy 2’s newest patch update builds on the Swan Song update, offering a fresh batch of modifications and tweaks that aim to balance the game’s difficulty. In particular, it ramps down the toughness of the True Rogue mode, making it more manageable and easy to overcome. Besides that, there are changes made to enemies and classes, as well, specifically to Commander Irad.

As for the latter category, the patch has buffed the Dragon Puppet, Mjolnir, Surfboard, and Assassin classes. Meanwhile, the Chef class has been nerfed. Changes to the House Rules are implemented as well, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable experience for casual players. Finally, fixes to user-reported bugs have been applied to the new version.

A distinctive Metroidvania game

Fans of Metroidvania games are more likely to enjoy Rogue Legacy, though some players have reported that the “roguelike” aspect of the game is oversold. In addition to a wealth of items to collect and environments to experience, there is a good deal of exploration to enjoy, even after the main story has been completed.

  • Pros

    • Hand-drawn art style gives the game a distinctive look
    • A detailed narrative that takes the player through the lore of the game world
    • Plenty of exploration to partake in after the final boss is defeated
    • A wealth of equipment, locations, enemies, environments, and more
  • Cons

    • Some players complain the game is too “grindy”
